Lanark 12/30, Riding, fishing, no catching

Headed down late to Lanark, as the tide was super low. Put the boat in at 9:30, and it was still shallow as the dickens. Joined several other boats putting along with the motor way up.

Otherwise, conditions were nice, with 55-60 degree air, light wind, and flat seas, with some rollers. Water temp 57. Headed on out, and hit spot after spot, seeing lots of good bottom, with no fish. Caught one undersized gag, no other fish whatsoever. Hardly any nibbles in 5 hours, and I went to at least 10 of my spots from 28-55'.

First time in a while I was completely skunked, but I needed to burn some gas.

Sounds familiar, EJ. It was a tough day. Did you notice any water discoloration around the Lanark area?

No, it didn't seem unusual in color, although it wasn't real clear, either. No dead fish spotted, although there were plenty earlier in the year. Lots of loons calling offshore, and some "rain minnow" size baitfish schools at the surface. Seemed relatively normal at the surface.

What is not usual is that there are so few fish of any kind on bottom structure off of Dog Island. The normal grunts, sea bass, and other assorted pecking type fish just aren't there, at least in large areas in the 45-50' range. I haven't fished any artificial reefs lately so I don't know if it is the same for those areas.
