Today I put in at the Newport bridge. Went downstream past the old boatworks . There were boats fishing in every channel that had been dug out. Seems they were catching keeper sized sheephead throw backs trout and reds. I talked to a couple that fished from the boatramp last night and caught keeper sheephead, trout and reds. They brought their boat back tonight for more. I talked to a fellow yaker who caught a keeper red a a couple of trout on live shrimp.
Those I talked to that went upstream from the bridge caught a few bass.
Oh what did I catch? well I caught snags 3 times a few bites by unknown fish (kept switching to smaller hooks but still didt find out what they were. Had a good time though.

Good news - my last few trips have been nothing but shorts and Butter/Sugar/white trout. Does anyone know what their "real" name is?
I hope the cold has run them up the river....

You know i always heard them called "bait stealers" I understand they are pretty good to eat. I have never seen them anywhere else.

They do eat great! scale em, gut e, fry em!!!

One tip- use a jighead with just a 1" piece of white GULP on the shank.
Fish it on a "bass" rod- very stiff graphite so you can feel the bite.
They cant get it off and you will catch them.

Yep. It is Bairdiella chrysoura, usually called Silver Perch. They move up into the rivers during the cold months and you can catch them like crazy on corks and pieces of shrimp.
