Motor repair question from the mechanically challenged.
Went out Sat. Leaving Cbelle, almost to w end of DI, when motor feels like it hits something. Depth is 20 ft, and nothing floating. When throttled in gear, no propulsion. Trim up and prop spins, but not at the speed and timing it should when in gear.
(At this point we sat in that fog, and hoped not to get run over since we were in the channel, and ate fried chicken and called Seatow)
Buddy's boat has a 250 Merc, 99. Where can we get a prop hub thing, cuz we assume that's the prob. Mike's Marine in Panacea is a Merc place, but is 1-1 on the lower unit replacement analysis. Maybe we'll fish yet! Dude comes out takes a look, and says he can probably fix it quickly. Spins prop, I think maybe turning nut at the bottom. (I was too nervous for my buddy who owns the boat, and bought a lower unit for the last boat so I stayed at the front). I hear the "uh-oh" then and know what's coming. "Your screwed. The rods broken inside". I believe this was determined by an attempt to remove the nut before the cotter pin widget, and something or another turning with this action, that shouldn't. I'm not sure what else could have been done during the 20 second diagnosis. So to the mechanically advanced, or MM service experienced what do you think?
If there was something broken between those points why: The prop wouldn't turn when in gear by hand, shouldn't it have? It would turn while not in gear.

SHEAR PIN
SOUNDS LIKE A SHEAR PIN TO ME. I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH MERCURY EXCEPT FOR AN ANCHOR. I DO NOT KNOW IF THEY HAVE SHEAR PINS ON THAT SIZE MOTOR. TAKE THE COTTER PIN OUT OF THE NUT, HOLD THE PROP. AND TAKE THE NUT OFF,, CHECK TO SEE IF THERE IS A PIN IN THE SHAFT THAT HAS BEEN BROKEN. IF IT IS KNOCK OUT THE BROKEN PIN , INSERT A NEW ONE PUT THE NUT BACK ON. WITH THE MOTOR IN GEAR NOT RUNNIN, TRY TO TURN THE PROP, IF YOU CAN NOT TURN THE PROP IT WAS THE SHEAR PIN, IF THE PROP TURNS YA GOT AN EXPENSIVE PROBLEM.

Drank a few sad
's with the boat owner and got a little more detail.
The repair dude used a piece of wood to hold the prop in position, while he attempted to remove the nut from the outside of the prop. While turning the nut, the entire rod thing was turning, instead of just the nut.
Doesn't sound good to me, but I still think the prop should have turned in gear if things were broken between those points in the foot.
Thanks for the input. Believe me I'm no fan of Mercury either!

If he locked the prop blade with the wood, and tried turning the nut and all but the prop blades turned. Sounds like a spun hub to me
Can you put the motor in gear and turn the prop-nut without turning over the motor? If you turn the prop-nut and it makes the flywheel turn, you got a spun hub and crooked mechanic
