St Marks 3-4

Post by Redfish Jim »

Left the lighthouse yesterday around 11:30. This was one hour after 1.1 low tide but brisk northeast wind made for some pretty skinny water on the trip out of the canal.

A friend of mine that likes to grouper fish taught me an old saying "wind from the east, fish bite least". I believe him.

Went to nearshore reefs and rocks in 20 - 25 and trolled Stretch...nothing.

Dropped down a live shrimp over structure in 20...nothing. :smt102

By around 2:00, the wind started to ease up and it turned out to be a beautiful day.

Ran to a creek just east of the Aucilla. Found a school of rat reds near an oyster bar. Caught about 20 of them all about 16 - 17". They hit jigs and shrimp on the bottom. Probably anything else I would have thrown at them. Thought about looking around some more for bigger fish but I had already spent most of the day not catching anything so I needed entertainment more than I needed work. I have a good mess of bream and catfish from a pond trip Friday so didn't need keepers anywhow.

Had a beautiful ride back right before sunset.

Hope everybody had a good weekend.
