CATCHIN ST. MARKS

Post by FUTCHCAIRO »

THE TWO OLD MEN OF THE SEA FINALLY GOT DOWN TO THE COAST . GOT THERE AT 8 A.M., LAUNCHED AT THE LIGHTHOUSE, WIND WAS FORECASTED TO BE 5-15, NOT, THE WIND WAS OUT OF THE N. AT A STEADY 20 WITH GUST TO 30. WE STAYED UP AS CLOSE TO SHORE AS WE COULD HEADIN EAST. WE USED MANY PLUGS AND GRUBS AND NOT ONE STRIKE. FINALLY ABOUT 11 A.M. THE WIND DIED DOWN AND WE STARTED GETTING STRIKES IN 4-5 ' OF WATER. WATER TEMP ROSE FROM 64 WHEN WE GOT THERE TO 70 AT 12 NOON. FROM NOON TO 2 PM WE GOT OUR 10 TROUT, WIND HAD DROPPED DOWN TO MAYBE 5-7 MPH. MOST OF THE TROUT WERE CAUGHT ON THE MIRR-O- LURE 52M-24 SINKER PLUG. WATER WAS CLEAR IN ALL OF THE WATER WE WENT IN. THIS IS THE FIRST TRIP CARL AND I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GO THIS YEAR, MAYBE THIS WEATHER WILL SETTLE DOWN BY APRIL, AT LEAST I HOPE SO. THAT WIND EARLIER TODAY JUST ABOUT WORE BOTH OF US OUT ROCKING BACK AND FORTH WITHOUT ANY STOP. I GUESS WE DID PRETTY GOOD, NONE OF THE PEOPLE WE SPOKE TO AT THE LANDING HAD CAUGHT ANYTHING.
IT WAS GREAT TO GET BACK OUT ON THE BAY AGAIN.

WTG Pa.. That wind seems to be the bite killer, and 70 degrees seems to be the magic number

HI T.C.

HI JOHN,, NO CARL DIDN'T DOUBLE UP ON ME THIS TIME, HE NEVER GOT A STRIKE ON THE GRUBS. OLD CARL'S WRIST ARE GIVING HIM A HARD TIME, AS WELL AS MINE. I KEPT SLINGING THAT 52-M WHILE CARL WAS RESTING HIS WRIST, I ENDED UP CATCHIN TWICE AS MANY AS CARL THIS TIME. THE NEXT TIME OUT HE MIGHT SNOOKER ME COMPLETELY. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENS SO OFTEN, ONE DAY CARL WILL CATCH 90% OF THE FISH, THE NEXT TIME I WILL CATCH THE MOST. I GUESS IT IS A MATTER OF PRESENTATION. MANY TIMES WHILE BOTH OF US ARE USING THE SAME PLUG, CARL WILL CATCH TWICE AS MANY AS I DO AND THEN AGAIN IT IS VISA VERSA.
HAVE YA BEEN DOING ANY GOOD WITH THOSE CHARTRUSE TWIRLLY TAIL JIGS THIS SEASON? GOTTA GO CHANGE OIL IN THE MOWER, SEE YA LATER.

Two ataboys  Good report PA.

Got a question for you. you wrote that
I GUESS IT IS A MATTER OF PRESENTATION.
Would you mind sharing your presentation on how you fish the mirror lure? Is it a diver, or suspended model? Steady retrieve, jerk...reel, let it float to the top, Twitch it a couple of times, Slow/Fast retrieve, .... etc. ? Thanks.

SIR REEL

HI S.R. BY PRESENTATION I MEAN HOW YOU RETREIVE THE LURE. YESTERDAY THE ONLY WAY THEY WOULD HIT WOULD BE TO LET THE LURE ALMOST HIT BOTTOM, THEN TWITCH IT A COUPLE OF TIMES AND LET IT SINK AGAIN. GENERALLY THIS TIME OF THE YEAR YA HAVE TO REEL SLOW SLOW. THEY GENERALLY HIT WHEN THE LURE IS FALLING. IN THE SUMMER I WORK THIS PLUG VERY FAST , ALMOST A STEADY RETRIEVE, MOST OF THE TIME I USE TOP WATER BAITS ONLY, IF THEY DO NOT HIT THE TOP PLUGS THEN I WILL TRY SLOW SINKING PLUGS OR SWITCH TO A DIFFERENT TOP WATER. MOST TIME IN THE SUMMER I USE A PLUG WITH SPINNERS ON BOTH THE FRONT AND REAR OF THE LURE AND WORK IT REALLY FAST , ALMOST A STEADY RETRIEVE AND TWITCHING AT THE SAME TIME.
HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU IN THE FUTURE.

JT...I don't ever plan on "get'n it down" ... but I'm getting pretty good at a "bait shrimp fettuccine" :lick:

PA.. Thanks for the information (NOTE TO JT...this is a perfect example of how to be helpful :o ) I appreciate the instruction. I've had some success with suspended yozuri type lures but I've stayed away from the sinking ones. I plan on trying your methods. Thanks again.
