Shore fishing in Destin

My wife, kids and I are using a buddy's condo for a few days next week in Destin. I've tried shore fishing once before on St. George, using my light tackle. Mainly caught some Whiting (I think that's what they were) and some waves. I know I'll need a little tougher rod than what I normally use on the flats, but what type of rigging? Live bait, frozen shrimp, bucktail jigs? Now the weather should be nice with a northly wind which should keep the waves timid, any suggestions or ideas? 8)
