St. Marks 4/1 Also

I had to wait for the gate to open at the refuge yesterday morning. I was the first boat in, with no one else waiting to launch. By the time I got my truck parked, there were 6 boats lined up, waiting to launch. I knew there would be a crowd, yesterday.

My plan for yesterday was to fish areas I haven't fished much, and to experiment. I headed east. Made a quick stop at a honey hole and put a 20" red in the boat on my second cast. I immediately released the fish, knowing I would catch a bigger one later. I moved on east and worked some shore line and creek mouths for the remainder of the falling tide. NADA. Moved south during the low tide to look for trout. It didn't take very long to find them. Caught something over 40 trout between 0930 and 1230. Probably 70% were keepers. The fish were very picky about what they wanted yesterday. All I could catch them on was a hard jerk bait, a Catch 2000, topwater, jig on the bottom, and a CT/jig rig.

Lots of BBFN folks out there yesterday. I talked to Saltshaker, Sundown, Sir Reel, and Birddog. All but Sir Reel had fish. :o

Moved back in around 1230 to find some reds. Soon after, the wind kicked up about 3 notches. Didn't take long to cover a lot of water. I caught either 6 or 7 reds during the afternoon, all on a gold spoon. One of them was exactly 18". Too close for comfort. The rest were smaller. Should have kept that 20" fish I caught early.

Back on the trailer about 1730. My GPS read 34 miles for the day.
What was I supposed to do today?

Thanks for the report

Sounds like things are starting to pick up.

I've been totally out of commission lately because of work but got today off.

Gonna plant some corn and maybe get out there for a couple of hours this afternoon.

Thanks to Salt Shaker for the invitation to follow his drift. Ended up not needing it. My experience was contrary to all the conventional wisdom being used here (I know that comes as a shock!)

On the water late around 10:30. Caught 25 or 30 shorts some right at 15 but threw all back. Caught 2 cats (first of the year) and one pinfish (also a first this year). Caught all fish in 4 1/2 foot or greater depths. Water was clear. Temp 69-70. Caught all fish on CT's with natural shrimp colors or candy corn. Everytime we hit trout, I threw top water, suspended jerk baits, and straight jigs. Had to ALWAYS return to CT's to catch fish. Caught only one keeper on a suspended mirror lure. Starting around 1:30 or 2 the wind blew hard and it was a rough time standing on the deck and heav'n CT's as far as ya could. Had my drift sock out but even with that it was a bouncy time.
