Prop Re-furbishing ?

Post by mjsigns »

I overheard some talk in the office about some place where you can send your prop to have it refinished or re-furbished or re-finished. I can honestly say I have beat the _crap_ out of my current prop. I have straightened it out with hand tools and hammers, and even used a hand file to get the burrs off. It is my understanding that the condition of the prop is directly related to your gas mileage.

Is there a place that will re-furbish/finish a dinged up stainless steel prop?
Should I just keep on trucking with this one? I don't have the cash to get a new one.... :(

Used to be a place called Gator Propellers in Perry Florida that would rebuild props. Someone told me they moved off of the Keaton Beach highway closer into Perry.

We used to send props to a place called Marine Wheels in Panama City. I'm not sure if they are still around, if so they always did a great job.

Given my propensity to "hit stuff", I put this list together a while back. These are not all inclusive but are locations that have the North American Hale MRI equipment. There certainly are other locations that can rebuild(ie Gator in Perry). Porters in Woodville will work Stainless but not aluminum. A lot of vendors are reluctant to work on aluminum now due to the cost of the material used to do the rebuild (ie aluminum prices in general). I have used Marine Wheels in Panama City and was satisfied with their work. One additional note I would add is that if you have had an aluminum prop repaired once, the second time can be more of a problem for the vendor, and after the second time..... you'd best figure on buying a new one. :-?

"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".

 Gators has performed miracles on some of my props!

Great work and reasonable and often above expectations.

Drop on down to Woodville and take it to Waivel Porter. He redid mine recently and did a fine job. He is also very resonable and local to Tallahassee.

Mine is a 3 blade stainless on a 150 Yamaha.

If you decide against Waivel, the folks in PC are good. I am headed to our PC office April 19th and can drop it off for you if you like. The prop shop is just around the corner from our PC office.
