Never take a BIRDDOG to a trout tournament

Post by Jumptrout51 »

My BIRDDDOG and I left the Aucilla ramp about 7:30 Saturday morning for a NFGFC TROUT tournament. We would have left the ramp sooner but there was not enough water to float the boat :-D . I had told the Dog all the way there where we would be fishing and made the mistake of mentioning REDFISH frequenting the area.
From the ramp for 4 whole miles all I heard was "are we there yet","are we there yet".
I had never seen anyone so excited about catching a TROUT,or so I thought. Once we idled into our TROUT HOLE the Dog is on the bow looking for V wakes and a gold spoon on standby. I have ocassionally caught trout on spoons so didn't question it too much at the time.Next thing I know the rod is doubled over and the Birddog is yelping about too big,too big. I'm thinking ain't no TROUT too big. Thats' when I see the red flash and big swirl. So I do what any good TROUT fisherman does.I dropped the net and went back to TROUT fishing. I didn't bother him at all while he landed his own redfish.
Having played with the spoon long enough he puts it down and starts throwing a topwater. Then I started to feel better until he remarks "I've caught more REDFISH on this lure than any other. Oh brother, here we go again. Then BAM he gets a nice hookset and I grab the net. Then I dropped the net. This time the oversized Redfish took his lucky redfish lure. I told him how sorry I was. I figure now he has to TROUT fish.
On the next 2 cast I put 2 over 20" trout in the boat and figure he will follow suit with some trout. WRONG. Back to the redfish he went.
By now we have to leave to make the weighin on time and all I hear back to the ramp is "how much quicker"he could get there from Aucilla and have so much more fishing time than running from the Lighthouse.
I would love to fish with him again, but next time I choose his baits.

Its true I got Red fever.

The thing I can't figure out is why you tooks us trout fishing in a redfish hole. I can't hold you responsible, those reds just seem to be attracted to me. They always seem to find me no matter where I fish.

I hate to admit it... but I felt just a tiny twinge of sympathy for ole Jumpy. From the sounds of things a lesser man just might have crumbled under the load. :D But seriously.....I'd get in a boat any day with them two... but only after they've safely got it in the water and the truck and trailer parked in the appropriate spot. :smt005

I have known some folks that would shoot a birddog that wouldn't hunt the way they's suposed ta. :smt067 :smt044 Guess all things considered they did all right just to make it back to the weigh in.

You got that right SR. He kept saying "Just one more cast, just one more cast". He took 10 to 15 ONE MORE CAST.

Someday, preferably not during a trout tournament, I would like to have the problem of cussing those pesky redfish that just won't stay off my line.
