'92 Merc 175 T/T Stuck

Post by RodBow »

My wife is looking at an unspecified boat type that has a stuck T/T. When we ran it yesterday the onboard mechanic was able to jerry it down in order to test drive the vessel, but after that it seemed to just die. No matter how much fiddling he did, he could not get the T/T to bring the motor back up.
The solenoid clicks when you push the button, but no engagement.

Any ideas or anyone know what this type a thing costs to repair - before my wife buys this 25' albatross??

It could be a lot of things, bad solenoid, bad ground, bad switch, or "most likely" a worn out T&T motor :o Jerry's Auto Electric "in Tally" can rebuild most motors for a third of the price of a new one :-D

Wevans is on the money. I would start by checking the solenoids. Possibly a switch. If it's the motor, take it to Jerry's.

What they said and in that order. If its a bad solenoid you can jump the 2 hot wires on the solenoid and it will work. If it does not work it is the motor.

There are two solenoids under the cowling. If the motor will tilt one direction, but not the other, switch the solenoids around. If the motor switches which direction it will go, you have a bad solenoid. Remove one of the solenoids. If the motor still tilts one direction, the one you removed is bad. If the motor won't do anything, the one not removed is bad.

You should have at least 2 t&t switches on the boat. One on the control lever, and one on the motor. If one of those switches makes the unit work, and the other doesn't, you have a bad switch.

If the motor won't go up or down, smack the trim motor with a hammer and try again. If it works after hitting it with a hammer, remove the trim motor, take it to Jerry's, and have it rebuilt. Your brushes are worn out.

If you would like, call me Monday, and I'll help you trouble shoot it.

Thanks to TC's intervention, all I may have is T/T that needs Geritol!

He performed a personal inspection, worked some magic, and suggested cleaning all the green stuff off.

This guy is full of information and came by it the old fashioned way - he
e-a-r-n-e-d it!

Thanks TC!

You're most welcome, Rodbow.

It has been said that my head is filled with an unlimited amount of useless information.
