Got to Aucilla at 8 AM just in time for low tide Friday. No problem on launching...except couldn't get the outboard started at first...but finally fired it off and away we went. Now at low tide you still have to be careful in this river but a 90 horse Yamaha, in a big boat passed us on the way out...flying. We were near the spot we call the "Volkswagon"...below the island..when I told the driver of our boat to slow down and move over toward the west side of the river. He did.....but the Yamaha boat hit the Volkswagon going wide open. I saw the motor when it came out of the water. They stopped...and I know something broke on that motor... probably the skag....but they cranked up and continued on out...much slower.
We encountered the most wind I have been in this year. The seas were running close to white-caps...and rolling in from the west. We almost turned back...but went on to the south part of the ditch....getting wetter and wetter. As I was getting my rigs ready...Dixie Reb caught a nice18 in keeper trout and before I got fully ready he had another one at about 17-18 in.
There was 3 of us and we went on to catch 13 trout, 1 mackrel, 1 flounder and too numerous to count catfish...both sail and hardhead cats. We used both white jigs and Catch 2000 (red & white) to catch the most fish. None of the fish had anything in their bellies except one with a small fish...and most of them were females loaded with eggs.
The wind slowed down some during the middle of the day but started back up after 1PM. Funny thing....the fish bit pretty good as long as the wind blowed...but quit while it was calm. We had numerous short trout.
We quit about 1430 and had a great ride into the river...with the wind to our backs.
Some friends came out about 10 am...and did well on live shrimp ...on C/T...as long as they were biting. Lots of little ones though.

It still amazes me the folks who will run blindly up, and down that river WOT.

...if all they did was break the skag, they have no idea hoe lucky they are.

"The Volkswagon"? That's a good name for it. I've seen it on a negative low tide and pushed off it with the puch pole...

If you look at that rock at low tide, you will see enough scars on it to know that there are a lot of idiots fishing out of that river. Years ago, I had a guy put in a 24 foot offshore boat right after me. Then he nearly swamped me heading out the river hauling butt. All the time over the motor you could hear him giving a running commentary to his crew on how you had better know these rivers to go out of them. He hit "The Rock" as we call it running about 30mph. When I pulled past him, all parts of his motor below the bottom of his boat were gone..sheared clean off. He asked for a tow. I told him to anchor up and I'd be back in about 2 hours to get him. Came back, pulled him using my little ole 20hp merc all the time telling my buddy loudly how you had to be careful in that river because there were rocks as big as cars.

The gang at Drug Runners Camp snickered at him the whole time he was loading his boat.
