Late Report Saturday St Marks

Post by T Smith »

So the day started out with no luck at Jerry's, they were out of shrimp again. But our luck would change for the better.

We started out the day on two or three drifts from Gray Mare to the Cobb Rocks area. Not much happening in the morning. We had a large shark tear up a hard tail we were drifting out back and I caught one 14" trout on a candy corn jig. My fishing buddy did manage to catch a dozen or so small pinfish on a sabiki rig, which would prove very usefull in the afternoon.

So around lunch time we decided to head over near the bird rack and try the mottled bottom. The wind shifted to where it was coming out of the south more and it actually died down a little. We fished the live pinfish under cajun thunders and caught six trout within an hour of each other. We ended up taking four fish home two over 20" and a 17 and 19 incher. I also had a cobia come up and take a pinfish on my trout outfit with 12# line. He took off and the line snapped in a heartbeat. The drag wasn't too tight but it popped anyways. I didn't retie the hook after the two large trout and I'm sure the line was frayed. So that's fishin 99.9% of the time you don't need to be extra prepared or pay attention to details, but boy when you miss that .1% chance of a big fish it sure sucks. :smt005
The wind really started kickin around two and we headed home.

One of the better trips I've had in a while all the fish were quality fish. I'd rather have four nice keepers than go out and catch 30 plus shorts, which has been my luck lately.

Total for the day
1 catfish
1 lady fish
7 Trout 4 keepers
1 4-5' shark break off
1 150# cobia break off
