We had hoped to run a good ways looking for some spots we hadn't fished in a while, but the weather forecast was too optimistic and about the
time we got to the other side of the rock garden we had enough of the 1-2's and started drifting. We picked up a couple of and keepers. I have never had a bull shark take a fish from me, but the last two trips it's happened to my father. Yesterday a 6ft plus Bull just came out of no where and striped a nice trout from my Dad, very impressive animal. Dad also picked up a nice spanish. The bite slowed but we decided to just keep drifting, good thing.
I have been thinking all winter, about Cobia on the flats, So I decided to set up on rod and reel with the perfect Cobia rig. I've got a 7 foot medium action rod with 20lb braid and 40 lb mono leader with an artificial eel. Everyone on the boat knows if you spot a cobia grab the rod. I love it when things work out. Greenbone was the first to spot one, he tossed the eel and the Cobia inhales it. We clear all rods and I man the trolling motor, Don does a great job in letting the fish tire out, we can't decide to use the big net or Gaff. After 20 minutes we agree that it's legal by several inches and I go for the Gaff. The cobia rolls on it's side a couple times just out of reach. The third time was the charm, Bam. Cobia on a stick.
We got him, 36 inches of keeper cobia.
Sure as a great day on the water with my Dad and Don.
