Kings

Post by jka_gator »

Last year we "accidentally" caught our first 2 kings. Now I'm wanting to find a few more. But I have no idea how. We've bought a couple of lures and I've read some about rigging; but how do you go about finding them? When do they normally run here in the panhandle? Thanks for any info.

Not an expert by any means but, most folks around our area catch their kings as a bycatch while they are anchored up bottom fishing. Put a live bait out on a fly (un weighted) line and let it soak while you bottom fish. If you want to keep it on top use a baloon. If you want to target them look for bait concentrations around offshore wrecks/reefs. Slow troll a live bait on a king rig ( 18" of wire to a single hook then add a treble hook on 4-6" of wire) around the structure. I've always done the best in low light conditions, early/late. You might want to slow troll that live bait around schooling spanish ;-) They wil eat their little brothers  You can catch them by trolling big spoons and plugs. I just prefer the live bait. They are usually in our area in good numbers by May and will stay until the bait schools leave usually in early November. My largest kings have come in October. Hope this helps.
