Fishing St. Marks Lighthouse 6-17-06

Post by jsuber »

I'll probably swing in Friday night too, but I will be there at 06:30 Saturday morning. I plan on paddling down to Stony Bayou and paddling back through the marsh. Rob and myself did a little exploring out that way last weekend, and I may just go to Big Cove because I have had a lot of luck in there lately. Come on if you want.

How far of a paddle is that, 3 or 4 miles? My boat doesnt paddle very fast (2 person perception backcountry, plastic). I need a better fishing yak. What do you paddle/recommend? Can you stand up in your boat? I know, too many questions. I just dont think Im ready to get back into a flats boat yet.

You want have answers without questions, and yes its a long paddle. The longer the boat the better for a long paddle, but that does not mean it will be faster. I drive a 16' Tarpon and its pretty fast when compared to a Malibu Extreme, but a Tsunami 145 sit inside will blow past me. Anyway, I'm going fishing not to a race, so if you look out of place we would find fish closer. Which not but a few hundred yards from the lighthouse.

As for recommendations I have friends who work with Heritage and Wilderness systems so I would recommend a Tarpon 120,140, or 160i or Heritage Redfish 12 or 14. The 14 is very stable at 31" wide, and very fast. Also locally available. Talk to Bakertize, he'll be glad to demo a boat for you.

......my bulky 12 foot sit inside just cant keep up. I heard that you can cut a lot off that paddle to SB by cutting across the pond. Have you tried that? Will you be staying out all day? Just curious. Thanks for the suggetions. I need a new/another yak. By the way I hooked a Tarpon at Palmetto Island (right next to SB and RG) last year. One jump and gone....
