BBSC--Inshore 6/16-6/17/06

Post by birddog »

Dale Evans asked me to fish the BBSC with him this year and I readily agreed. We met Friday morning at 4:45 a.m. at Advantage Marine in Medart. On the water by 6:00 a.m. in route to some of Dale secret trout holes.

We spent the day concetrating on 3 specific areas; a spotty grass flat that averaged 3', a secluded lagoon that had a creek feeding into it, and a broad, shallow sandy/grass flat surrounded by deep water.

Within minutes at the 1st spot, Dale and I both had good trout hooked on topwater baits and within seconds both had them throw the hooks. We believe they were both 5lb. + fish. Oh well, thats the way you're luck runs somedays. My 1 st fish of the day was a nice red about 24". A trout tournament and I'm catching redfish. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

The bite was pretty good on and off throughout the day. We caught really decent trout all day, with only a few under 18". Most were in the 19"-22" range. we threw back at least 4 limits of trout. The bite shut down around 4:00 p.m. but we continued to fish until around 8:00 p.m. At the end of Friday's fishing we had a decent 4lb. trout and had thrown back a few other 4 lb. trout, but knew that we had to have a 6 lb. trout or better to have a chance to win.

We met Saturday again at 4:45. Upon arriving at the ramp, we were met with a stiff 15 mph wind. It was gonna be tough. Proceeded back to the secret trout holes and did our best to fish in the blowing gale. Dale quickly put a pup redfish in the boat raising our spirits some, but it was not to be. Did not get another bite for the next 3 hours.

We decided to load the boat and head for a more protected area. Trailered to Site Plan B, quickly on the water and drifting through some good looking grass flats with hopes of salvaging the day. No dice. Not a bite in a hour and a half. Decided to call it a day.

I owe a big thanks to Dale for a great day Friday and a great effort Saturday. I really appreciate the opportunity to fish the BBSC. Fridays trout fishing was the best I've seen in a year or more. A special thanks to Advantage Marine in Medart for all their help and assistance. Dale and I both regret not bringing home the biggest trout for them.

We'll get'em next time Dale.

You "may" have claimed some cash with a 4lb-er since we pay out to 5th place.

Speckled Trout
FREDDIE BLANKENSHIP 6.25 $750 (+ $1435.00 Jackpot)
CASEY GRAY 5.95 $300
GREGG KNOX 5.25 $150
DEWEY WILLIAMS 5.10 $50
ROBERT DICE, JR. 4.60 $25

Also, handheld scales may not give you the exact wt like the calibrated scales used in the tourney.

Sounds like you got in some great fishing though.
