I USE A 4 WT. OF ALL THE FLY FISHING I DO THIS IS THE BEST. AS YOU GET BETTER WITH CASTING , YOU WILL BE ABLE TO THROUGH JUST ABOUT ALL 70' OF THE FLY LINE. WHEN FISHING IN A BOAT FOR BREAM 70' CAST ARE NOT NEEDED, WADING IN A POND TO HIT A CERTAIN SPOT YOU WILL NEED ALL OF IT. THE BACKING IS JUST TO HAVE SOME EXTRA FOR CASTING AND JUST HOW MUCH EXTRA LINE DO YOU NEED FOR THE OCCASIONAL WALL HANGER LARGEMOUTH.
I USE A A TAPERED UNTIL THE TIEING PORTION GETS USED UP AND THEN I TIE A TIPPET TO THAT.
I'm new to this fly fishing myself so take this with a grain of salt but i believe the "4/5" on the rod means that the rod performs best with a DT-4 (Double Taper line or a WF-5 (Weight Forward) line.
I used my 4wt 7 1/2' Redington on Lake Hall last weekend and got a 13" bass, a nice hand sized 'gill and a small bream in about 15 minutes. I was using a small mylar sinking fly.
I HAVE THE 4 WT ORVIS BATTEN KIL????? AND A 9FT ORVIS FLY ROAD. TIPPET I BELIEVE IS WHAT FLY FISHERMEN CALL A LEADER????? I JUST BUY A TAPERED 6' OR 9' LEADER ONLY THE LAST 2' IS ACTUALLY THE 6lb TEST. WHEN THAT SECTION GETS USED UP THEN I JUST TIE SOME MORE 6lb ON WITH A BLOOD KNOT.
9 FT IS BETTER FOR LONGER CASTS SHORTER RODS ARE BETTER FOR TIGHT SPOTS LIKE RIVER FISHING AND A MAJORITY OF ALL THE BREAM I CATCH ARE WITHIN REACH OF A 12$ BREAM BUSTER.
I haven't bought the rod yet. At Kevin's they have one a "River's Edge' that's about 6'6" or 7'. 5 wt. He said they got it for guys who fish the local rivers.
I am considering it also as a first rod, then I could fish the rivers and the sukkee.
I have also been told the 4 pc rods have more "action" than the 2 pc.
Decisions, decisions.......
