6/21 & 6/17 Holy Crap

Post by Littoral »

A top 3 ever moment (6/21)
6/17
Haven't had a chance to report lately but I met Abcarius last Sat & really enjoyed fishing with him. He know's what he's doing. Kudos to him for staying with the fly rod in stiff wind for a good 2 hours. Fish weren't cooperating though. The only highlight to speak of was the 22" trout I finally convinced to take a Chug Bug.
Look forward to fishing with you soon Steve.
6/21
Today was for the fly rod. I was on the water with a buddy of mine by 6:00am and we picked up a few big lady fish on topwater. There's a lot of bait around now (Pilchards in particular). On my way out surprise surprise up pops Bakertize. He'd already scored a nice trout & we chatted a while. I thought he'd stick around and fish with us but I looked around & he was gone. I guess he had other directions or thought we wanted the spot to ourselves. I hope he found more fish than we did.
I started with one of the chartreuse Merkin Crabs that Noleflyfisher gave me and my buddy used a pink deceiver. He caught Lizardfish and after an hour of casting I finally hooked a Ladyfish. On the flyrod I'll take it. My buddy moved elsewhere & I switched over to a weighted clouser and kept casting, and casting some more.
I needed the practice.
Then, after a decent cast and a few quick strips the line started to take off. I turned the rod to set the hook and up leaps the giant silver monster fish. :o Tarpon!
It did the full jump and was somewhere close to 100lbs. The whole episode lasted for about 3 seconds.
3 glorious, eternal seconds.
I think I could have used a slightly heavier tippet than 14lbs.
The fly was gone but who cares, I didn't really bother fishing much after that. :D

A decent cast with the fly rod is reason enough to feel good... but then!!!... FISH ON.. Good job Lit. That mental picture will stay with you for a long time. :D
"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".
