CATCHIN ST. MARKS-EAST-WEST

Post by FUTCHCAIRO »

THE TWO OLD MEN OF THE SEA, AND ROY LAUNCHED THE FISHIN MACHINE THIS MORNING ABOUT 7 A.M. AT THE LIGHTHOUSE POOL. WE WENT TO THE WEST FLATS AND THE 3RD.-OR 4TH CAST HAD A TREMENDOUS STRIKE, SET THE HOOK AND THEN THE FUN WAS ON. HE CAME UP ON TOP AND JUMPED AROUND FOR ABOUT 5 MIN. BEFORE I SAW IT WAS A BULL SHARK ABOUT 3' LONG, GOT HIM TO THE BOAT AND DISPOSED OF HIM PROPERLY. CARL HAD SEVERAL LINES OUT AND CAUGHT A NICE KEEPER, 19". AFTER THAT ALL WE CAUGHT WERE SMALL SHARKS, SMALL BLUE FISH, AND A COUPLE OF SEA BASS. AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR OF THIS WE DECIDED TO HEAD TO THE EAST FLATS, WE CAUGHT A TOTAL OF 22 TROUT OF WHICH WE HAD A NICE MESS OF FISH TO TAKE TO THE HOUSE. THE WIND WAS ABOUT 10-15 INSTEAD OF THE FORECASTED 5-10, MODERATE CHOP ON THE FLATS, VERY HOT. THE WATER TEMP WAS 84 OUT ON THE FLATS. ALL OF THE KEEPER TROUT WE CAUGHT WAS ON CUT BAIT, MAINLY CUT UP BLUE FISH, CAUGHT MANY HARDHEAD CATS, AND BABY SHARKS EVERYWHERE WE FISHED. NOT A BANNER DAY ON KEEPER TROUT BUT WE HAD FUN ANYWAY, GOOD FRIENDS FISHING TOGETHER IS THE BEST, DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER , MAYBE IF EVERY FISH WE CAUGHT WAS A 30' TROUT WOULD BE BETTER.

Pa, you and Carl have scared every fish out there. I'm surprised you find any fish. I'm sure when the fish see your boat they hide.

Glad y'all got out there.

I was wondering how much longer before the flats went shark crazy. Seems to happen to me also about this time of year. Between you and I there should be a decline in the population.

My experience is that if you use cutbait this time of year...you will catch a lot of hardheads and sharks. I went yesterday to Aucilla....fished the west side of the river a lot...caught no sharks.....but I didn't use any cutbait either. The big trout were feeding too as I got my first 5 lber in about 2 years.
Gulp shrimp was the ticket.
