Shimano Symmetry aren't too hard on the wallet. Love my Stradic but getting a little more pricey. Don't know what Walley World carries.

Shimano, Shimano, Shimano!!!! Love my Stradic. My brother and nephew have had good luck with the Shimano Sahara. It's very smooth and seems to be holding up well. It's about half the price of the Stradic. I like the Bass Pro Shop rods - normally buy them as a combo.

Went and looked at Wallyworld, the Garcia with 5 ball bearings feels real sweet, that and an ugly stick at 7'

Thanks man. They are really nice. You should come over next week and we have a lot of spinng reels and we also have a new line of rods called challenger marshmaters that come with a lifetime warranty. I put my Stradic on one and I love it.

If you don't want to break the bank the Okuma Avenger is a good deal for about $30 in a reel with a decent drag. Match it up with a Shakespere rod at wally-world and you will get $200 performance for about $70.

SO GA Outdoors is pretty cool though I like to walk around after I golf up there I need to buy something cool there besides dog collars and such.

As usual the regulars have given you sage advice. I have both Shimano and Okuma reels and both are excellent although I like the solid feel of the Okuma a bit more than the Shimano. My wife and I use both and they have done very well. Ugly Sticks are a good choice for a rod and reasonably priced (I wish they would add more colors--my newest US looks just like the one I used for bass fishng in the 1980's). My redfish rig is a 7' Ugly Stick with an Okuma Avenger 30 and it was less than $70.00 and is in its second year of use (sometimes abuse). I have a couple of cheap Shakespeare reels that came as combos with inexpensive part graphite rods that have lasted much longer than expected. Of couse the last cobia I almost caught (broke snap swivel at the boat when he saw the gaff) took an Electric Chicken on 10# test on one of the cheap Shakespeare rigs. It did remarkably well. Wally World has Shimano and Ugly Stick and you could be well rigged in one stop. The old Oshmans (now Sports Authority) in the Tallahassee mall has a good selection as well. P.S. I have found some good stuff in garage sales and pawn shops as well. Back when I lived in Daytona I found a $100.00 plus Penn baitcaster with rod in a pawn shop. I did not buy it but went back to get it and it was gone. They were asking $45.00 for the rig. Good luck.

I've been buying most of my stuff from South Georgia Outdoors lately. I have two of the marshmaster rods with Shimano Symetrys reels. They have been sweet to me at the coast.

So which Ugly Stiks are y'all fond of? The regular Ugly Stiks seem a little stiff to me for long casting. But I have two Ugly Stik Lites: SP-11702M http://www.fishusa.com/tackleshop/catal ... F6801&fx=1 and SPS-1186 2M salmon-steelhead http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00030 ... ?n=3375251

The 7-footer is fine for popping corks and freelining live bait, but the 8-6 has been a little disappointing. I thought it would cast light lures farther than it does.

Maybe I should try a regular US with a good reel and line?

I'll second the Shimano Sahara. I have a small one (2000) on the lesser US Lite. It's been great, and the whole rig cost less than $100 at Sports Authority a couple of Christmases ago.

For yakfishing I have been using the Shimano Stimula rod for $14.95 retail at Sports Authority. I know, I know--it is a bit extravagant price-wise! But with the Okuma Epixor EB-30 baitrunner-type reel from Boater's World, you are good to go for about $95.00--works for me. Here's a nice 24 inch red that I caught at Spring Creek with this outfit--gave me a nice 10 minute "sleigh ride" in my 9. 5 foot Hobie Sport.

Well, now. this is eerie. I have a Stimula with an Okuma, but it's the Acuador FS40, a step down or three from the Epixor. It's a nice little rod, and I can see it would be good for a kayak. I would imagine a good red would give it a workout.

I've been eyeing the Epixors for awhile too.
