Went to Keaton yesterday with my wife, son, an old friend of mine, and his 2 kids; to do a little scalloping. My friend and his kids had never done it before and I hoped that we would find a few. The forcast looked ominous but we decided to chance it. Because, due to scheduling conflicts our next window of opportunity would be the last day of the season. Got to Keaton around 8:00 and headed out. Went down buy piney point and got in. We found a grand total of 13 scallops.
They all had fun any way, finding starfish ,sea urchins , and a couple of scallops.
There were only 5 other boats scalloping so the word must be out that there aren't any. It became slick calm so we ran out to the 9 mile bar to play. The kids enjoyed it more out there swimming around, finding sand dollars, shells and hermit crabs. I have never seen so many hermit crabs. 99 out of a hundred shells that you picked up had a crab in it.
But the highlight of the day came in the form of a large round snall shell that I picked up to show my boy. I set it on the back of the boat and climbed in. My friend that was still in the water said that it was moving and picked it back up to find a small octopus in it.
He got it out and we all held it marveling at this neat little creature( it was maybe 4" long) My friends boy is the last one with it(he's in 7th grade) So my wife says put it on top of your head and we'll take a picture. What does he do he puts it on his forehead. Everyone is laughing at him because he is a real cut up.
The next thing you know he starts screaming, everyone is laughing hysterically
because we think he is playing. Then he chunks the octopus and we realize that he has a hole in the middle of his forehead.
I had know idea tht they were capable of that especially one that small.
He shook of the pain and dove right back in. They all want to go back again. I just wish that I had gotton that picture.
