Aucilla Trip 8/13/06

Went Sunday with Grim Reeler out of the Aucilla. Overall it was a strange day. We never went out of the "shadow" of the mouth of the river and fished either 2 to 3 ft out to 10ft. We used CTs with rootbeer Assassins, gold spoons, a TopDog and some Mann's white and green flukes. We caught a bunch of topsail cats on the rootbeer jigs along with two 14 to 15 inch trout. A shark of about 4 ft hit the rootbeer jig and after a blazing run and a jump (which I have never seen from a shark before) cut through the flourocarbon leader.

We had another shark eat a pinfish in half and got into a school of ladyfish. Right when we were dealing with the ladys we caught a 19" bluefish on the fluke which went in the cooler. Later in the day, in shallow water on the inshore side of a big sandbar just off the mouth of the river we caught a 20" trout on the fluke which also went in the cooler. We also caught the first ever cutlass fish I have ever seen.

We also saw about a 5ft shark in very shallow water. He had his dorsal fin up for about 10 minutes and we occassionally saw his tail. We can only guess that he was on the hunt in the shallows.

So at the end of the day we only had 2 keepers, but caught about 7 different species of fish. As usual for both of us, not one hit or bump off of the gold spoon. I will keep trying, but have yet to catch anything on a gold spoon. No swirls on the topdog either. All of the water was dark. We fished from about 7am to 1 pm. Low tide was at 11am that day.

Fished the same places you mentioned Monday (14Aug06) We had about the same luck you had...plenty of catfish both sail cats and hardhead. We did manage to get 4 keeper trout. It was about as hot a day as I have spent down there.

The cloud cover held until about noon that helped make it a nice morning, but it heated up later.

We did manage to catch a couple new nicks in my skeg. You just cant go too slow down there at low tide.

I'll post a pic of the cutlassfish when I get a chance. (Posted) That was the shiney-est fish I have ever seen.

Sounds like a pretty good day for this time of year

Me and a friend used to target big bull sharks (200+ lb fish) in shallow water and they would jump clean out of the water. Amazing sight!

Don't give up on the gold spoon. About as good an artificial bait as you're gonna find for reds. Most anything else will hit 'em too.

Keep chunkin that spoon. When you put it close to a hungry red, you'll love it.

The blue and trout were pan fried with bread crumbs and made into sushi rolls.
