Aug 19 yak fishing report - Alligator harbor

Post by abcarias »

I was treated to the sight of a monster tarpon jumping completely out of the water for no apparent reason first thing this morning. He probably heard I was coming. It was truly magnificent. I was only able to net a couple mullet but one found a 26 1/2 red which is nice and cold about now. The circumstance of catching the fish was a bit strange though. I manged to tangle all three rods just as I found myself in the middle of a very large school of reds. I was in 7 or 8 feet of water and suddenly they were surrounding the boat feeding on something close to the surface. After a good dose of panic, I was able to chunk a mullet out to the feeding fish. They were all very large fish. Unfortunately, they disappeared as quickly as they surrounded me and I was not able to find them again (a bit choppy). The cats were out in force unfortunately which made using dead bait impossible.

I think Ron and I will go back (very early) next Saturday if anybody would like to join us.

Hope to see you out there Lit. Did you ever get a poon? How about the rest of you locals? jsuber, 2true, etc.? I know Bakertise is working and Apalach fishes week days only. There are lots of pin fish and you can net mullet at the landing sometimes. Plenty of reds in the harbor and still showing tarpon activity. Hope the weather holds up.
