Scalloping St. Joe - your recommendation?

Post by EddieJoe »

Going to take my daughter scalloping at St. Joe Bay tomorrow. If you were going, would you: 1)trailer and put in at Eagle Harbor, then run the boat to a spot; 2) trailer to Presnell's, then run the boat; 3) put in at the City Boat ramp and run to a spot; or, 4) put in at Apalachicola City ramp and ride the inside ICW to St. Joe, then run to a spot? I will be originating from Carrabelle, where my boat is stored.

Also, I have heard the best area to scallop is still south of Black's Island. Appreciate your recommendation. I have scalloped the Bay many times in the past, but not for several years and not on Labor Day Weekend.......

Pressnell's and get their early. Last year they limited the number of boats they put in. 2nd choice would be the city ramp at Port St. Joe.

If you do the ICW, you are going to have a REAL LONG ride in the boat.

I think the city pier is a lot easier. Look for the boats to find scallops. If you don't find any in 10 minutes move until you do. It'll be easy....

Presnell's as a first choice. St. Joe isn't much further away if Presnell's is full. Also, I believe Presnell's only allows 150/day to launch and also charge $10. St Joe is free without a maximum boat limit. The scalloping area you reference is approximately 6-7 miles from Eagle Harbor.
In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. And we will understand only what we are taught.
