St. Marks 9/9/06

Post by birddog »

My son told me earlier this week that he wanted to go fishing on the coast this weekend. Now when he says he wants to go fishing what he really means is he wants to go down and ride around in the boat and play. He didn't have to twist my arm too hard to get me to go.

We arrived at the LH around 7:00 quickly unloaded and burned a trail to Wakulla Beach. I was hoping to catch a few reds still feeding on the last 1' of falling tide. We weren't disappointed. Throwing gold spoons we had 3 good strikes from redfish and manged to hook up with 1. A nice little 20"er.

With the water fast leaving the Wakulla Beach area and my son starting to run laps around the boat, I figured it was time to do a little exploring. Decided to see if any Manatees where still around or if they had already began migrating back south. We left WB and ran clear up the St. Marks to the hwy. 98 bridge. No Manatees. we came back down the St. Marks river and wouldn't you know it, there's 3 manatees just north of the lighthouse channel right in the River channel. We had a blast looking at them. They came right up to us, looking us over several times. Appeared to be 2 adults and a calf. They would leave for a minute then reappear again right beside the boat.

After a while the Manatees went about their business, we continued on. Watched a fellow ripping what appeared to be slot reds out of a hole in the St. Marks River. Would've liked to have gotten in on some of that action. We headed back over to Wakulla Beach hoping to catch the 1st of the rising tide, but no dice still too shallow and we needed to be going.

Headed back to the LH. Ran into Butch and Jumptrout in the LH pool. They had been playin SeaTow, towing in a broke down boater and were heading back out to chase the trout. They had the finest stringer of Gafftop sailcat I've ever seen. We said our goodbyes and loaded up. It was a fine day on the water. Spent some quality time with my son and even found a couple of fishing holes that will need further investigation next trip. Can't wait til next time.

Ran between Pattys and Johns 4 different times Sat. Never did fish around Pattys. I think we were in the St. Marks river around 12:30.

When you read accounts of sailors in the 1800s mistaking manatees for mermaids....you know they had been on a ship full of stinking shipmates too long!
Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and the line at the boat ramp gets longer.

I wouldn't be too hard on him Dad.... consider the instruction he's had! :o :-D

I would give a lot to be able to go back in time and have my boys ask to go fishing, even though they'd be ready to come in after an hour or so. You keep taking him, it'l be the best parenting you'll ever do!
