Here is what I want for navigating the rock gardens and those creeks between the Aucilla and St. Marks river. I plan to build one but can't seem to find the time. I think Chalk is familiar with this boat. I just can't bring myself to take my 21' bay boat in there. I have twice and hit rocks both times and that was idling with someone on the bow watching.

The "best" way to fish that area if you arent willing to take a more conventional boat in there is get an good alum jon boat ~14-18 long with a go-devil style motor. I think I have bounced off just about every oyster bar between bottoms road and shell point my dads old boat. Nothing to show for damage but missing paint on the bottom of the hull. I even got that thing airborne off a stump on lake seminole, and by airborne, I mean 6 inches or better out of the water.

The emphasis is the boat needs to be aluminum, and it needs to be heavy gauge and quality built.

Otherwise, to fish that area, you need to go slow, and still have an expectation of hitting things that dont give. My skeg and prop both have their share of battle scars, as does my trolling motor prop.

Thanks to everyone for all of your help (and the humor). Though, for some reason (probably a good reason), I still don't feel much more confident about heading into that area in my boat. At any rate, I will give it a go, and give it a go going very slow. Heck, I think I 'll just troll into the area without being in any rush.

In fact, perhaps I should just put my waders back on and hike it. But then again, I purchased a boat because I was sick of hiking in my waders, and because I wanted to find the fish. Go figure.

Reel Therapy, now you have the right idea. Most of us that frequent the rock garden, regularly, idle a lot. Others buy props and lower units.
