My seaark tunnel allows me to run on plane (and idles) aprox 3 inches shallower than a standard hull, without a jack plate. I dont believe a jack plate would give me more than an inch - it is mounted higher. My best speed/shallow running comes when I trim it until it cavitates, then back off a bit. As long as the prop isnt cavitating, I get good water flow. But I still dont run the rock garden - dem dere rocks come clean out of the water.

You give up speed with a tunnel. You lose surface area in the precise place you want it for top end running, but my boat still runs 30, so no worries.

TUNNEL HULL

Post by FUTCHCAIRO »

REDBELLY, I NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE OUT OF THE SEA ARK, RAN GOOD IN CHOPPY WATER AND SMOOTH, I NEVER TOOK IT OUT OVER A COUPLE MILES FROM SHORE, HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH SWELLS. AS STATED BEFORE IT DEPEND A LOT ON DESIGN OF THE TUNNEL, TRIM, HOW FAR IT IS JACKED OUT OF THE WATER, WHEN I WAS GOING FOR ANY DISTANCE I ALWAYS DROPPED THE ENGINE BACK TO TRANSOM HEIGHT.

Reverse does require more RPM because your prop is higher than usual and the hull is of course not pushing water in reverse. I never thought it was a problem. I give tunnel hulls the  . Just tell your buddies not to follow you to close when you run over a bar or super skinny shallows. They will not always be there when you turn around to look for them. Additionally don't come off plane too soon because you run shallower than you float.

They do take a little more throttle to reverse, but its a small price for the advantages.

Its true what will-fish-4-food says about following one. A friend of mine was telling me about how he took the foot off his motor the last time. He was following a tunnel out of the aucilla and nailed the landing rock. He tells me he still hasnt seen that boat again.
