Imagine catching a sheephead this big on the flats. This is what happened today out of Aucilla River over toward Econfina. Dixie Rebel caught this one...right at 3 1/2 lbs. He thought he had a record redfish...but alas...only a sheephead.
We went on to catch 8 trout, 2 nice reds and this sheephead. All in all a good days fishing. Didn't start out this way though. Did not have a trout @ 1100 hrs. Got 8 by 1330 hrs. Got a dukes mixture too....jacks, gar, crab,....got a crab on a c/t, trout, redfish, lizardfish, ladyfish (she was again no lady).
All fish were caught on green curlytail grubs with gulp trailers. We had close to $200 worth of gulp shrimp with us....but no takers today.
I've seen a lot of sheephead tailing on the oyster beds and wondered how I would catch them off the flats. I guess I could chunk a fiddler up there on a light line.
JSuber.....I
ve seen more fiddlers this year than in many a year. They are "coming back" to places they have been gone for 10-15 years....like Aucilla River....Yates Creek. I've seen them by the thousands around Yates' Creek lately.
Previews a good coming year for sheepheads when winter really gets here....and this one is as big as I have seen from around here.
When I left St. Marks Monday Night they were hered up in the grass by the millions. Redfish will surly be feeding up in the long stuff on those extra high tides.
