I killed my first with a .223 savage. That is a sweet gun. I hope you find one.

Me too......I went to the woods this afternoon to inspect the stands, and I spooked a nice buck in the thicket right next to the tree where the climbing stand is. I'm sure they'll be gone in a few weeks just in time for the season to open

Get out there with your bow and pop him now. If you wait he'll be gone. Lesson I learned long ago. :-D

Dolphinatic, just as another idea…….. I’ve thought about the subject of a first caliber and what rifle model subject extensively (I tend to over research such things).

Last week I finally decided and bought 7 yr old Casey a NEF Youth model 243 (w/scope). I first borrowed one and Casey shot it well. The recoil didn’t seem to bother him as he shot it 8-10 times. I was taught using a single shot and feel that it’s a good choice. I bought Casey’s locally but I understand they have them at Wal-Mart as well.

Here’s a thread of about what people say would be a good first caliber rifle for a youth:

Here’s a review of the NEF Youth model rifle:

I’m sure you’ll make a very good decision Dolphinatic. If your near Gainesville your welcome to borrow it.

Thanks for the offer Brian. I'm here in Tallahassee and we go hunting on the N. Florida-S. Georgia line. I'm familiar with the .243 you mentioned. My first gun was a H&R .20 gauge (New England Firearm) that has the same design....single shot breakdown barrell. I was just hoping that someone out there had a used Savage that was price comparible to a new single shot.

If you end up buying a new NEF single shot, nobody can beat South GA Outdoors price. Give Heath a call 229-377-3829.
