Now I don't want to reinforce stereotypes and cliches about yankees, but growing up in OHIO I am not quire comfortable with all the snakes and to some degree gators around here. I would be a little scared for my dog in territory like Bman is hunting. Is this a legitimate concern? Anybody ever loose a dog to snake bite while snipe hunting? I'm even a little scared to use a retriever for ducks at the beginning of season in the south. Help me understand why this shouldn't be a concern.
Thanks in advance, and lets go Bucks
In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. And we will understand only what we are taught.

Cran- I don't know if you would count it as REAL Scotch but I had a glass of Macallan last night
And yes my legs were tired! No one had to rock me to sleep.
Showboat-
I know several people who have lost dogs- but they were pets that were playing in the water near the lake house. Not hunting dogs.
And anyone who quail hunts here knows someone whos dog has been snake bit.
A lot of people will not hunt a lab while it is still warm.
That being said- never had an Alligator in my decoy spread- didnt see any yesterday.

I've sure nuff seen em at Lake Iamonia and big'ns too! Had one several years ago that came out when he heard the shoot'n and was pick'n up ducks when they hit the water. There was another blind a short ways off where they were better shots and he moved over to harrass them
I seem to remember some time ago where someone who lived on the lake lost or at least had a gator try to take their Lab. Story was in the Democrat.

I won't suggest you use your dog during early duck season but later is okay. The gators don't eat much during winter as they can't digest foods very well then (too cold). Had dogs bit by snakes hunting uplands but not lowlands. A friend of mine has a excellent snipe dog and uses him frequently without a problem.
I was always told to beat a tree with a stick while holding a bag to get snipes. I didn't know they were real till now. They do resemble a woodcock though.
