Dog Island 11-10-06

Post by Ripple »

The weather finally cooperated on a day off, so I could not pass it up. Wife had to work, so I told the 11 YO daughter that we had to go. However, she needed to catch up on some sleep, so it would be a short trip. This would be her first offshore trip, so the pressure was on…

Got down to Lanark around noon and the gulf was like a pond, allowing for a 50 mph run to the fishin' grounds. Dropped the Stretch 30s into 40' of water at 12:30. Trolled some good spots for 30 minutes without any luck, so we had our lunch on the move and the first rod went off as I was finishing my sammich. It was a MONSTER…..lizardfish! Not long after that we went over a really nice ledge that I did not have marked. She was watching the screen as I said "WOW look at that" and punched the waypoint button. A few seconds later a reel started clicking and we hauled in a gag that looked short, but came up just over 22". Pictures, high fives, dogs running around, hooks flying, etc… Once the chaos settled, we put the lines back out and made a big loop back to "Lindsay's Ledge" where we picked up a bigger gag - this one around 27". I had been reeling them in because she was worried that they would pull her into the water, but she worked up her courage and agreed to take the next one. Loop back to the hole, hook up, and she takes the rod to winch in another 22.025" gag hollering "hold onto me Dad" the whole time. I told her that she would float, but the rod would not, so I kept a hand on the rod. A little later we pick up a nice 29" and it is time to hit the Island to run the dogs then head home.

A great quick trip - four legal gags in two hours, 2 lizards, and no shorts. They were hitting both the readhead and blue mirror Stretch's. Water temp was right around 68.

First Grouper of the day.

Now that’s an awesome fishing trip! Good for Lindsay on her first grouper rally and good for you for taking her. My hat is off to you. I enjoyed reading about your day.

I’m stoked about taking my 7 year old boy out next week for his first grouper.
