Cabelas Prodigy Reel

Post by Littoral »

What am I missing here? I need to know how Cabelas Prodigy stacks up to the Capricorn. The Prodigy has an extra bearing & they've reduced the weight in the reel, from where? Cabelas won't tell me. Does anybody have a suggestion on what I should be aware of with buying a clone(OEM)? The Cabelas people say if they can't fix or replace the same model after 2 years they will replace with something comparable. Something tells me I am missing something here.

Cabelas has never screwed me over. Call back and talk to a product specialist during the daytime. They usually know their stuff.

I was deciding between the prodigy and capricorn as well. I decided to go with the prodigy and have had no problems so far.

I decided on the Prodigy too. Tackletour convinced me. I haven't fished it yet because I miscalculated the size I wanted -too big. I ordered the 2500 and I'm waiting for the replacement 2000. I fish as light as I can. I was concerned about how it might be short changed compared to the Capricorn. I still don't know where the weight came off but I'm not concerned.

The weight is a puzzler. You would think that the extra BBs would make it slightly heavier. I suppose they did have to machine away a space for the bearings though.

I'm curious about your reasoning behind the 2000 vs. the 2500. To me the extra line capacity of the 2500 with only an additional ounce of weight made it the more desirable choice.

First, clarification on the weight difference. The difference in weight between the Prodigy 2000 and 2500 is 1.4 oz. The difference between the
Capricorn 2000 and the Prodigy 2000 is .3 oz.
I’d say 3/10 is insignificant but, for me, 1.4 is not.
Agreed about the line capacity being an issue. I really do fish with as light a reel as I can. I do use medium weight 7ft rods. I mostly use 6# line (P or Yozuri composite) so I get a lot of line on the spool. Also, if I’m going to get spooled then it’s not likely the minimal difference in capacity will matter. I am the much bigger variable to success in catching a fish. Patience, Knots, drag, patience… I landed a 42â€
