New to Area - Fly Fishing Questions

Post by Dr. Jones »

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the area and am trying to find my way around. I only have a little 14 ft jonboat with a little 9.9 on it. I am used to flyfishing for trout up north and am looking for good places to get my feet wet in the waters around here. Any recommendations about where to go in the St. Marks or Wakulla - or on the flats in Apalachee - would be greatly appreciated. I live in Tallahassee and am eager to get out but I don't really know where to start.

Thanks for all your help,

-Bill

I fished many a year in a 12 foot cypress jon boat in this area, and still take it out sometimes. Right now it is hard to go wrong anywhere on the flats. My suggestions would be put in at the St. Marks lighthouse and run to the east flats and the shorline and creeks just north of it. Any poppers should work early and late in the day in 2-3 feet, and use clouser minnows later in the day over the patchy bottom. You can work the shorline on high tide for big trout and reds with a crab pattern. Also if you are new to the area and would like to a guide to show you around I can recommend several.

I agree with Tom's directions. What I want to add is that the answer to your question will take some time because there are a lot of places. Welcome, you have arrived in a paradise for fishing.
Actually listening to what other people say is worth the effort.
