Snipe Hunting again..

Post by bman »

December 7th

Had a client in the morning and then found myself free yesterday afternoon and decided to go out chasing Snipe.

The front that came through this week appears to have brought a lot of new birds down.
I got out area about 4pm.

I shot my Uncle Glen's Belgium Browning 12.
I just had it refinished and really wanted to put it through a workout.
It turned out good for a 60 year old gun!

Just as I started a Snipe jumped 20 feet from me.
I took it as a good omen and it proved true.
First few flushes were long and I was getting frustrated.

I had two birds in the bag early- close flushes and single shots.

Then there were a few interesting shots/flushes.
The first was a single bird that I knew I hit but he kept flying.
I watched and he made it about 30 yards before folding and fluttering down, landing with a splash in the water.

Second interesting one- a Snipe ran from one tusset of grass to another.
I kept myself on his blind side and walked right up to him before he flushed.
Single quick shot and he was on the ground.

Third- I flushed one bird from the edge of a good looking area. Just as I swung to shoot 5 others jumped.
I shot my bird and unsuccessfully tried to catch up to a 2nd.
Taking my eyes off the first and trying to find another, I did not see exactly where he dropped. I was afraid I had lost him.
Just as I was about to give up I turned around and his white belly showed clear!

Sunset was at 5:30 and ended up with 7- one short of a limit.

Great hunt!! That is some very challenging shooting!! We use to hunt woodcock and they were like shooting bats with feathers.

Sounds like a good outing, well done.

The old Belgium Brownings are in the group that we call "tractor guns".

Together with the older Baikal guns and Remington 1100's, these can be left on the tractor, used to knock nails in with, never cleaned, totally neglected, but still shoot straight and will never let you down.

If you want a testing outing, take a 20 bore over and under next time.
