Left Tally at 4:30 am, really. Arrived at the East point of St. George Island a little after 7 am
With shrimp and pinfish.
Weather was wonderful, slightly cool, water temp 80, light chop and just enough breeze
To keep the no seeum’s at bay.
Water pretty clear in 2 to 3 feet, saw several rays, a little bait fish around.
First bite a ladyfish, and a little later something else interesting but never found out what.
That was it for the next couple of hours, saw lots of dolphin and some high flying Spanish, but no bites.
I tried everything in the tackle box, I was with a friend and we each had a live pinfish rig out,
Me on a Cajun thunder and him on a double pompano rig with pinfish, had to look like a
Pinfish Christmas tree. Not a single hit on pinfish all day.
Switch to a red head jig with live shrimp hoping to at least pick up some flatties,
Got a little excitement, I was up to my thighs and about 20 feet from shore, when
I catch something out of the quarter of my eye, a 4 ½ foot bonnet head shark
Between me and shore, I rap my rod at him and he splits, that’s a good thing.
I finally get the chance to feel a fish again, when I hook into a little 2 foot shark.
We stay until about 2 and I get one more chance at a bite, but spit the jig.
Never saw anyone else catch anything except rays.
I was a bit disappointed, since yesterday at St. Marks, I caught trout, flounder, bluefish, and Spanish a nice day,
And I had dug out an old issue of FS and the author had said fishing from the East point in the spring was about
As close to a sure thing as it gets.
Well so much for shore fishing it’s back to the boat for me.
