Sea Duck Hunting

Post by MudDucker »

Went to Tilghman Island Maryland with my boy Drew and buddy Ben for 3 days of hunting and eating on the Eastern Shores of Maryland. Hunted with a fella that a friend recommended...C.R. Wilson, a real nice fella.

We flew into Washington National..hint...will not do that again!!! Rented an SUV..they gave us a brand new black Jeep Commander..so we looked like thugs in thug city. Could not beleive it, but it was dark up there at 5PM when we pulled out of rental car place. Missed one turn and some how ended up on the front steps of the capital with a thug mobile loaded with shotguns. When I go back, I will be flying in and out of BWI!!!!

Cranked up my laptop GPS and soon had us sailing out of the city and on our way. Rented C.R.'s mum's little house by the narrows. We arrived to find out that one of our bags was still circling the conveyor belt at the airport. Fun trip back to DC the next day.

We hunted Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday we hunted out of a 42 foot white working boat. Wednesday we hunted out of the little boat...a 30 foot old wooden work boat. On Monday we knocked down over 20 sea ducks, but only picked up 13. Tuesday we saw fewer ducks, but picked up 12 and lost only 5. Those are the TOUGHEST birds to kill that I've ever seen. We were shoting at ducks from 55 to 65 yards, which C.R. said were the normal ranges. These ranges coupled with heavily feathered birds lead to a LOT of frustration. C.R. said they decoy better when it was cold. Lows were 42 degrees until Wednesday's low of 32. The 32 low was not considered cold. We killed every type of scooter and several old squaw. Wednesday, all we hunted was Old Squaw and we picked up 10 and lost 4.

Ate great food at the Cheasapeake House on Tilghman Island.

Was expecting some tree huggers when we checked into the airport, but instead found folks who seemed excited by hunters with a cooler full of dead birds. The lady checking us in said it was a first for her. Ben carried 2 in his carry on. A security guy got all excited guessing that those dead birds in his bag were in fact dead ducks (think he won the bet). Flew back getting back into Valdosta at 10:15 PM, tired as a dog.

Had a lot of fun and I would recommend sea duck hunting and C.R. to anyone.
