Blue Water Thunders

Post by trout fisher »

I asked this same question on FS and so far have gotten 50 views and one reply. Ya'll help a brutha out. Has anyone ever used the blue water cajun thunder for cobia or any other species inshore. It's got a clasp on the bottom where you can attach a leader, swivel, or a hook right to the cork. A friend of mine here said he heard(ya know how that goes), that you could attach a hook and a live pin to this rig and drive the cobes crazy. The bait would be somewhat suspended 6" under the water surface. Tom, if you read this, tell me the best way to hook the pin. Do I want him to swim up or down. Thanks in advance.

I bought one of the blue water thunders at the FS show, and discussed it with the vendor. Basically, it is the same as the other thunders, but with beefed up hardware for heavier line classes and fish. I was advised to use it with 3-4 foot of leader, not putting the hook directly on it. I suppose you could, but the other makes better sense to me. With light current, I would hook through the back, to make them swim down. With strong current, you may want to hook thru the lips, to keep the bait from spinning. Also depends on the size of the bait, and how lively.

I have used it once offshore, and it worked fine, but I missed the one strike I had with it.

Thank you EJ. I like the idea of a leader as well.

I heard they were developed for the guys down south to use for kings and sailfish. I'm sure they would be a better option for live baiting cobia as well.
