AP 12/28, 29

Post by Carpe Piscem »

The family and I made it down to the coast last week to visit grandparents, my brother, sisters, and nieces. In addition to Christmas festivities we managed to get out for some grouper fishing. 12/28 my brother and two sons (11 and 9) started out in 35' trolling Stretch 30's. Less than a minute into our troll a 26" makes it to the box. No more takers despite running over a couple of proven spots in the area so we tried spots in 42', 45', and 48' finally putting another 26" fish on ice.

Headed to another location in 50' only to find someone anchored down. Since the seas were starting to mellow we decided to see if we could add new GPS coordinates to our list and turned West. About 30mins into our troll we came over promising looking bottom (48'-52') and I hit MOB just in case. As the Stretches came over the location the port rod went off. Three more passes resulted in three keepers and one short so we decided to anchor since the junior crew memebers wanted to see if they could pull some fish off the bottom.

My 11 year old proved to have the touch and landed seven or eight BSB on the same piece of squid. One last drop on that piece of squid produced his personal best grouper at 30". With six nice grouper in the box and a few BSB, we decied to point the boat North. Catching details...

Water temp - 60 degrees
Seas - 2-4
Wind - E/SE 5-15
Depth - 35' and 48' produced
Troll speed - 3.5-4.0 knots
Stretch colors - dark purple was by far the best producer followed by blue/chrome. Green firetiger, red firetiger, and gold did not produce.

We did go back out on 12/29 to our new spot now labeled "Dbl D 1" (no it's not what you are thinking, my sons names both begin with D and they came up with the name) to scour the area for more new spots and added another pair of fillets to the freezer. A few pics of the trip follow.

Nothing like finding new good bottom nobody else knows about.... :-D

If you will just e-mail me your coordinates, I will make sure it is not one of my spots....

Nice catch!

Dubble,

I don't have access to my GPS right now, but as best I can remember if you'll head on a course of 185-200 off AP for 10-20 miles I'm sure you'll be in the "area"...

Very nice CP. Your young boys will remember those trips with fondness. Great job! It’s funny how the hum of running back home puts em out. You did well.
