Fisherman gets hooked - in the eye

Post by bman »

A SYDNEY man has become hooked on fishing – literally – after a three hook lure became lodged in his eye.

Sam Layoun, 32, from Seven Hills in Sydney's west, ended up with the triple fish hook lure in his left eye after his brother Charlie attempted to cast out on the Hawkesbury River at the weekend.

He was rushed to the Royal North Shore Hospital for eye surgery where the hooks were removed from Sam's eyelid – but not before he posed for a photograph.

Sam escaped the incident without any damage to his eye.

Doctors returned the lure to Sam, who plans to use it again when he returns to fishing in a few weeks time.

I wonder if when he gets it back, if he's going to push down those barbs, I always do, especially on plugs with treble hooks. I don't mind risking a lost fish now and then for the safety and the ease of release.

I had to snatch two out of my hand this past year..The bad one was over by Patty's Island one afternoon by myself. I didn't push em on through, just got a good grip on the hook with needlenose and looked the other way and snatched ! they was both past the barb..
The other was trying to git a short trout out of the net with a X Rap in his mouth....It wasn't in as bad. Then just held my hand over the side and let it bleed a minit..then back to fishing.......
Worst thing happened to me last year was a catfish put a fin in the web of my hand one afternoon....I quit fishing for awhile then..don't know when I've had anything hurt like it did....

I had a 7" cathish fall off a multihook rig while releasing another catfish on same rig, it fell and its barb went through my leather shoe and through my big toe, right next to the toenail. I tried pulling it out and couldn't. I was fishing on a pier and a man nearby came over and cut the barb of the fish first then gripped the barb with his pliers and pulled, it hurt. I limped for about a day.

Those catfish are bad news, anytime I catch one the first thing I do is cut off the barbs before I will touch him

First of all JT51, you don't have to hook anything for a backlash ask anyone who's fished with you ,they know :-D It's a good thing it wasn't Owner hooks, they would have had to cut half his face off if he wanted that lure back. they got some serious barbs on them there hooks

I feel that pain! Spent a month one Sunday at Capital Regional
getting a hook out of my thumb after traveling from Rock Garden back to
Econfina to Tally. A few weeks later a catfish got me and it was
much more painful than the hook episode.
It may be that my sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

That'll leave a mark!
If there's not a life after fishing, I don't want to live it.....
