What else should I be using?

I'm fairly new to flats fishing. I've mostly been out of Keaton for trout. For the most part I use a split tail Salt Water Assasin (Candy Corn & Electric Chiken) on a red jig head under a Canjun Thunder. Different leader lengths. I've always cought fish using this, but should I be trying something else? I'm going down to Keaton March 15th for a few days. What bait should I not go out without?

I have had alot of success with GULP shimp in molting or new penny for trout and redfish. Even cauht a nice 20" blue fish on GULP. I normally fish them on a 1/4 or 3/8 red or white jig head and fish slow on the bottom.

This has been my late summer early fall pattern. I haven't had the chance to try them in spring yet but I am confident they will produce.

Never go out without topwater. Remember anything a bass will hit a trout will hit.

I use DOA paddle tails Rootbeer with a green tail and depending on the depth of the water anywhere from a 1/16 to a 1/2 jig head. I have a great deal of success with this and topwater early in the morning with a Super Spook works really well to pick up a nice gator.

When used with C.A.L. jig heads the lure may be jerked around or simply retrieved in a straight line, the lighter the head the shallower the lure can be fished. Use the diagram as a model when placing a worm hook in the body.

The above mentioned are good. I also really like the Salt Assassin eel in candy corn and the new Assassin Shrimp Coctail. But also do not be affraid to throw out the jig without the cork, sometimes it pays to be slower and on the bottom, especially when the water is colder. Oh yeah a good jerk bait like a mirrolure or rapala x-rap can be good.

I'm glad to find another Keaton Beach fisher. I fish with friends there, but my home area is Suwannee. Still looking for a Suwannee fisher.

Gulp is the most productive for me, but expensive. I start with the lower cost SWA or DOA. If nothing then Gulp.

Several fishers suggested top water. I could use some help with top water. My success is very poor. I try to follow the tips i see on the fishing shows with little success. Maybe this will be my break out year!!

Do a search for fishing with topwater on this site and the FS site. There has been a lot of good discussion on topwater baits.

CAUTION....DO NOT USE TOPWATER...until you are accustomed to catching LARGE TROUT and REDFISH.
Practice with the dinks first.(Like Chalk and TinCan do.)

That's right we practice with the dinks and bring the meat to the scale
