Keaton Beach 6-13-03

Well boys I'm sure ya'll have heard the story by now. Here is the "rest of the story." Thought my fishing partner and I had a plan. We did. Just two different plans. :o I won't go into the confusion of Friday the 13th along with Chalk's run of bad luck last week. I'll simply say that if your going to take a kid fishing, make sure you put the directions in writing.
Now a fishing report, and not much of one at that. Due to unforseen cirmstances I didn't arrive at the Keaton ramp untill 9:20 am. The sky was clear, the wind was calm, and the water was smooth. Water temp at the mouth of the canal was 83 degrees, and black in color. Decided to head North six miles to the Yates Creek area first. Water was high in the backwater and loaded with floating grass. Could not use lures for the stuff. Tried to drag a pin fish under CT. Too much floating grass. Fished for about an hour with no hits before the first storm hit me. Fellows it was a good one too. Had my bilge running wide open and still standing in water. Had this boat four years and that's the first time for that. When the storm let up, I headed to Big Grassy Island and cleaner water, that's about twelve miles from where I was. Fished there untill 1:00 pm. Caught one Spanish 19" long and three keeper rock bass on cut pin fish rig, fishing in about five foot of fairly clear water. Not the first Trout, not even a short one. By this time it was one run after another trying to dodge the storms. Finally one came along that covered the entire horizon. I was about ten miles from the landing. Made it about two miles in extremly rough water when my temp alarm went off. Stopped the boat to check the motor. About 40 pounds of floating grass built up on my motor and shut off the water supply to the pump. Water was so rough I had trouble hanging on to the back of the boat to clear the grass off. By this time the storm caught up to me. I had to fight the rain, the grass, and the white capping water for the whole ten miles. Made it back safe but beat up. Had a wonderful time, can't wait to go back this Friday for three more days of it. 8)
