St Marks Report 06/21/03 (Hands Helping Anglers Event)

Post by Sir reel »

We got everyone together and on the water around 8:40 am. Weather was great and seas were probably less than 1 ft. :D Luke Newman was riding with me as my assistant and our guests were Billie and Dennis Morreau.

My plan was to head east of the lighthouse for 5 or 6 miles and anchor off of some rocks, set up a chum line and hope the bottom feaders would cooperate for our guests. When I reached the area, I decided to drift so Luke could bring up some pinfish to use while we were anchored. We started a South Easterly drift and I rigged up Billie's rod with a white grub with pink tip, and tipped with fishbites. I threw it out (with no cork) thinking She could play with the pinfish or maybe a rockbass, etc. I had barely turned around good and Billie is reeling in.... with something obviously pull'n back. :o In comes her first trout and although it was short, She was happy as a lark. I put her rig back in the water and before long She had another trout except this time it was a 15 1/2 incher. :D  Then Dennis brings in a nice rockbass and with this... the Captain is thinking ... :o ....heck with the chum line... these folks are drift'n and catch'n... don't mess with success!! :o All the fish were caught in 10 to 12 foot with lead jigs and grubs tipped with fishbites. The colors we used in addition to the white were chartreuse double tails and rootbeer. We caught all fish with jigs on the bottom just drag'n while we were drifting. Our guests did little but just hold the rod until something took it. I didn't fish but don't know when I enjoyed a trip more.

We had a great day and all you need to do is look at the faces in the pictures. Even when we got back after a rather warm day on the water they were still all smiles :D

Got to say the Club did a nice job with their part of the organizing and I could not have had a better partner than Luke Newman(aka bigshark88). He was absolutely the best. Super guy, excellent fisherman, good sense of humour. Does not own a boat!!... all you folks looking for a buddy ... here's your man! He's ready to go on a moments notice.

Our total catch was 6 keeper trout, 2 rockbass, 1 short trout, 3 short rockbass, 1 remora, 2 catfish, and one very large trout lost at the boat when it spit out Lukes grub. (I would estimate a 26 incher at least) (had it been my fish it would easily have gone 28 inches)

The last words that Luke and I heard from our guests after they shook our hands and said good bye was Dennis asking his wife...."do we have any corn meal at home?" :o :D :lick:

Here's some shots from the trip:

End of the day and all smiles

My buddy Jon and I took out Fred Neiman. Fred is blind from RP and had a Trachiotomy due to cancer. But he is a trooper, and a heck of a nice guy.

We started out in Stoney bayou and lost a couple of fish early due to Fred's lack of understanding of a circle hook. While he was fishing with shrimp I started throwing a chug bug and hooked a huge trout. Well, I swapped rods with Fred and he fought the fish for a good while, but the hooks pulled. The crab man was working the area so we decided our spot was about to be disturbed so we went on out to a rockpile to chum.

Once we got anchored and deployed the chum I handed him a rod baited with a live shrimp and it lasted about 20 seconds. Fred learned quick about the circle hooks and landed a nice 23" spanish.

Next the pinfish rod screamed, and it seemed like the fish ran off 30 yards of line. I handed it to Fred and the battle was on. About 5 minutes later he pulls this 21" gag in the boat.

After catching a keeper trout and quite a few ladyfish and sharks, we decided that we would head in to beat the storms. Fred said he'd had all the fun he could stand and so had I. We were back at Shields at 2:00.
