Casting.

I just found this website the other day, Good job. I just moved to FL from being stationed in KS. Well I went fishing the other day and saw someone with a bait casting reel and was casting like double the distance that I was. So I went and bought a Penn 113h, I am wondering if anyone has any rod suggestions for it and any casting tips for it, I have never used a bait casting reel before, cause I never wanted to deal with backlash and bird nests. but now I am willing to learn, Thanks

I think you have to much to learn with.

You want to cast a PENN 113H, have fun, thats a load of reel to try and cast. Most people use them for bottom fishing and trolling. Look into an ugly stick or something along those lines, but for casting may need to 7ft or more in length.

I think that he needs to take that 113H back and get something that can be eaisly controled. I have seen pretty good casters that could not control that Penn with out some modifications.

Try an Abu Garcia 6600 C5. Leave both white brakes on and play with the mag brakes. That will eliminate the backlishes. Rod, try the Diawa Sealine X 11 footer. It is still going to take a lot of practice to get the distance he wants.

But then if this post is not a troll, a little practice, a cannon release and an 11 foot spin surf casting rod could eaisly double the distance he is getting with his spinning reel.

Course, if he's fishin from a boat and not the surf, that 11 footer may get in the way

Yes Sir, I would definately go with a 10-12 footer, and a lot of lead, at least 4-6 ounces, maybe more. I have a couple of settups, one is a 10 foot, the other a 12, but they have Penn GTI's, and they do really well. I think I can sling those things a mile.

I am going back to my original recommendation. I can get out to 70-80 yards with bait using a 6600, Sealine X 11 foot rod and 3 ounces of lead. When I pick up a 113H, it will birdnest. Don't even have to cast

That thing has absolutely no cast controls and unless you add some magnets or something, it is basically uncontrollable on a long cast. It can be done, but IMHO it is a little large unless you are Shark or Tarpon fishing from the beach. 475 yard of 30 lb. test line just is not necessary from the beach or the pier unless you are targeting something real big

One thing further, I have a Shimano Baitrunner on a SealineX Spinning rod, a Breakaway Cannon Release and can easily get 60 to 70 yards with 2 oz of lead and bait. It is not necessarily the difference between spinning and casting, but technique and practice.

Thanks for the infomation, yeah I put that penn back in the box and I'm going to give it to my uncle for christmas or something lol.. Sorry I haven't really been checking in but I've been kinda busy, and Thanks again, I'm sure I will sick around and continue to read all the post to pick up tips and tid bits of much need infomation.

Another tip to avoiid backlashes and birds nests, when casting a "bait caster" reel.

Tackle up as normal and tighten your reel up, using the centre spindle ajustment.
Then loosen it ,until your chosen weight slowly falls to the ground.
Practise a few casts and gradually ease the adjustment further , as your confidence grows.

I have never had the technical competence, to add or remove magnets, or hacksaw off level wind devices, etc.
But, this works for me.
