Good job on standing up for your rights to fish. Its unfortunate that this person gives "treehuggers" a bad name and everyone else is happy to jump on the bandwagon of bashing him. Its too bad that you feel the need to berate him in the process. Although misguided, his intentions are not necessarily bad. He is probably just a misinformed idealist. Instead of retreating to our respective corners of beliefs (us against them), maybe it would be a better alternative to have all the ideas on the table (a dialogue) and meet somewhere in the middle (a consensus).

Sorry, but being a "misinformed idealist" in no way justifies acting like the village idiot, especially to kids!

I agree but I also don't know anyone that did NOT have that cranky neighbor who for some reason or another hated children. When I was growing up, it was the lady that lived directly behind us (and across the street from my best friend). Playing ball was an issue either at my house in the backyard, or at his house in the front yard. She would always watch and come outside to yell at us if we stepped in her yard on her precious grass. It didn't stop us. God forbid a ball or something, went over the fence into her backyard. It was like in the movie Sandlot, where the "moster" would eat the balls that went over the fence.

D-man! You Rcok! Man, I'm still laughing about that old fruitcake running around harassing those kids and fishermen out there on that Leon County Retention Pond...I can just see the ole coot out there waving signs around as our NFGFC holds a meeting out there some time. I needed a laugh today and you provided it. What really got me laughing so hard tears came to my eyes was that picture of you out there with the big offshore pole throwing that Stretch 30 out in the retention pond!

On a serious side, it really disturbs me that another human being (or, should I call him - Inhuman Being) would make a statement about liking the snakes around the pond to keep the children away.

Somebody grab him up and launch him out a torpedo tube, please!

Maybe take him grouper or flats fishing fishing. Who knows maybe he is just an old coot like me bitter cause he has no one to go fishing with. At any rate challenge him to find out why people fish. I'll buy the two day license.

I wish that dude would ride up here and start that junk, us South Jawja boys have been known to be "crazy". I hope he didn't upset your kids since they weren't hurting anyone. Except for those poor little fish! HA HA!

We had the crazy old dude across the street. Unfortunately his house sat right in front of the best place for the bream to bed. If he caught us fishing from his lot, he would run us off. Last time he did it, he started having taxi cabs show, pizza delivery, wreckers and even a bakery delivery show up at his house to deliver his surprise orders. I don't know who it was, but some of those bad neighborhood kids would be across the street rolling laughing to hear that old man argue that he had not ordered any of that crap

The kids had a great time fishing regardless.....they did get a little excited when the "seasoned citizen" came back while I was there with them. They were like "Mr. Tom, what are you going to do?" I told them it would be fine and that I would take care of it. They were quite amused with the exchange of comments that took place and I think I moved up a notch on their "hip belt." On our way home last night, he was out again doing porch patrol scanning the pond......funny

I think we're gonna launch the 12 ft. jonboat in there this weekend since I can't seem to find the time to go anywhere else

Now that's an eloquent response!

You have obviously never tried to have a dialogue with a "well meaning" treehugger.

I think he is being bashed more for being a nosey old coot that doesn't like kids and for inserting his own personal opinions that don't coincide with the law (typical liberal ideology). I dont feel that bad for so called "needing to berate" him though. If they were fishing on his private property, he could say whatever he wanted. About his intentions, what is gained by running off a few kids that are catching and releasing a few bream just for the shear fun of catching them??? Too bad he doesn't know that my son loves to catch snakes and they will attract the boys down there just as much as the fish...not keep them away

My son actually bought one of those new snake baits and they are gonna fish with them down there this weekend on the edge of the pond where they have been given permission by the owner to fish. Can't wait to see what the coot does when he thinks the boys are fishing with his "repellant."
I'm all about meeting in the middle, but it's hard to do that when you're told to leave and not even invited to sit at the table of compromise.
