I would bet more deer have been taken with a 30\30 than any other caliber in th world :smt066
Thats because it is such an old gun that folks shot it when there were a lot more deer and no seasons to stop them.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

Nope, never owned one. Shot one at the range. Watched how it dropped so fast and lost its energy and chose not to play cowboys and indians. I know, I am special.

Had to get into this one...I got a 30/30 and haven't hunted or shot it in years....I do carry it in the truck during the summer in case I should need something heavier than a 22 or 357..

A 30/30's ballsistics are certainly not impressive compared to most of the hunting cartridges available today but it isn't a dog either.

A 170 grain bullet with factory loading. approx 2200 fps has a drop of -4.60" at 100 yds according to my old Sierra reloading manual. Plus its still got approx 1200 ft/lb of energy remaining... Anything hit with it is gonna know its been hit. Its not 30/06 class but still a pretty potent round.

You must not be a South GA native MD? I agree with GAJOEY, all my buddies and I started out with one. They are a great short range gun.

I am in So. GA and a bunch of my buddies hunted with 30/30's cuz that was cool. A bunch of them missed deer because they didn't hold over them high enough too. I started with an old 30'06, but soon moved to a 270. If and when I deer hunt today, I take a 270. If I knew my shot would be 50 yards or less, I would not have a problem with shooting a 30/30. I am not saying ya'll are crazy for having shot a 30/30, but you got to admit, putting a scope on a 30/30 is like putting a dress on a pig. :smt005

The new 30-30 bullets made by Hornady do better as far as drop goes. I know that I shot mine at a 100 yds with the new bullets and it was shooting about 2" higher than the Remingtons that I sighted it in with.

https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_sessio ... d1f845cb05

you can look at the ballistics on the different bullets on the page and see the difference
Bottom line is the 30-30 is not like it used to be!!!
A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the telephone.
