Last couple of times out I've run my 90 deeper than usual with the jackplate and it seems to have a positive effect. Next time I'm in shop for anything I'm going to add a water pressure gauge for sure...I'm convinced that's the way to go!

With the GatorTrax I just watch that grass go up in the roostertail and grin! :-D

Are the water pressure gauges universal or are they motor specific?

Both. You can buy a universal that requires splicing into a flexible cooling line. Or you can buy a manufacturer specific product. There should be a removable plug on the head or the block of your motor for the manufacturer specific model. Either will work fine.

Turns out the grass burned my water pump up. James said the housing was even melting. I am pretty good about hearing the changes due to grass, but must have missed it badly on the last trip. Might need to look into one of those gauges.

I've been following this post and I have to say that grass has never really been an issue for me when running out in the open. Now it is an issue when trying to get as shallow as possible, but that probably has something to do with the intake actually being in the grass.

Could it be that you are running the motor hot by having the jackplate set too high? Or motor tilted too high? The reason I mention this is because my buddy has a 60merc and if you don't run the thing at the perfect height then it will over heat and buzz EVERY time. He initially thought it was due to grass but has since found that it was due to how he drove it. He is trouble free now that he has figured out how his particular rig needs to be run.

Grass is definitely an issue if it is extremely thick, but it is rarely that bad. I would tweak with the trim and tilt, you may lose a tad bit of speed by having to lower your motor but it may cure your problem. Just a thought.

Interesting some folks have trouble and others don't. I have had some frustrations this year with floating grass; had the buzzer go off probably 5-6 times (yammy 90). I've tried lowering the jack plate without much success, and my water pressure doesn't seem to change before it happens. I can usually hear or feel a change and clear it before the buzzer sounds, but not always. I fear I may thave o address some water issues anyway as water seems to be climbing/walking the transom at times and splashing way up on the motor.

It depends on the motor. My 90 Merc is the saltwater model and the water pickup is on the front of the foot. I will pickup water as long as the foot is in the water. Other motor have the water pickup farther back and they have no problems. My son-in-law's 150 Yamaha never overheats from the grass. This is the worst time of the year for floating grass other times of the year it is not an issue. When grass gets around the foot, the water pressure will go to zero. I have seen it drop with a small amout of grass, but not enough to overheat. I can also hear the RPM drop when 'grassed'' but do not depend on it.

The low water pickups with the water intake on the front of the gear housing is best. Otherwise you guys are running your motors too high.
