Focus on your 'off hand' on the butt end of the rod moving downward towards the deck

AND

Focus on your rod tip release attitude (trying to avoid the helicopter)

These are two considerations I try to keep in mind during the cast.

Also if it is a spinning reel the spool must be full.

Ok guys thanks for all of the advice, so this is what I got. Right now I think I have a 12 lb test non braid, whatever it is its coming off because like what ( What a mess) said I do not have the spool full, I forgot about that trick . What is the action on the rod?

Rod- Shimano Clarus 6’6 Line WT 6-12 Lure WT 1/8-1/2 oz Power Med Action Extra Fast

Reel- Shimano Symetre 3000 Line CAP lb-yds 6-230 8-170 10-140

I am assuming by medium what they really mean is moderate. Does it bend say about half way down the rod blank? If it does, then that's a moderate action. If it's stops further up the blank then it's a fast action.

There ya go Dave. Nice set-up. I would have preferred an xtra 6-12" of rod, but you're fine. Put a couple yards of mono under some 10-15# power pro. Since you have a fast action, make sure your rod fully loads (ie. pause for a second after you pull back so you get pressure going forward). Good luck

I got the Suffix 832 (20#) on my new Calcutta 100b. I love it, I can cast a country mile, but it's the only line I've ever had on this reel, and this is my first Calcutta, so I don't have a point of reference to compare it to. I do plan to upgrade my other reels to Suffix from Powerpro when they need new line.

Let me Let me make sure I got this right, your suggesting using 10-15 # power pro with a couple yards of mono as a liter? Sounds good, like having the best of 2 worlds. Is the 10-15 # power pro is braided? If I have a few yards if liter, this will not affect my casting because want the liter be getting loaded into the reel? I’m just thinking about where the two line are going to be connected hitting my guides. Do I just tie them together?

Going w/ braid you have 2 options
1) using mono as a backer
you'll want to spool on a little mono (just cover the spool) and tie the braid to the tag end. Fill the spool the rest of the way with braid.

2) using teflon/plumbers tape as a backer.
goes the same way. cover the spool and then tie your braid around the spool and tape and fill it up with braid.

The idea is to give the braid something to "bite" into and keep form just spinning around the spool.

Here's a thread on the topic: http://www.bigbendfishing.net/phpBB3/vi ... =8&t=23387

As far as a leader goes, I know some bass guys in Tx that use 10' leaders so that their leader to main line connection is hauling butt when it comes off the spool. That way they can use smaller & lighter guides. Apparemntly they enjoy tearing inserts out.

Dave,
Connect the braid running line to your leader by using two Uni knots and jamming them together (trim the excess close). Another option is a triple surgeon's knot. The leader gives a little stretch but more importantly, it puts distance between the lure/bait and braid so the fish don't see it. You can use regular monofilament for leader, but if the water is especially clear fluorocarbon leader will trigger more strikes. It's more expensive, but a spool goes a long way. I normally rig three to four foot lengths for my leaders. That leaves enough to re-tie during the day without causing too many problems with the guides.

We'll be covering topics like this (rod set-up, leader, knot tying instruction, etc.) in the Flats Pro Seminar on Saturday, 2/12, at Shields Marina in St. Marks. For more details, check out the thread on this forum or visit my web site and click on the Seminar tab on the upper-right hand corner of the home page.

Mono or teflon backing, then braid, then mono or fluoro leader.

use the tape and get a small spool of 15 pound power pro and you will be able to put that whole spool on your reel.

Meh...

Skip the tape, skip the mono backing... take your reel to Kevins and get it filled up 100% with the braid and it will be cheaper than buying a spool of braid off the shelf from Wal Mart

You will have no knot in your spool and no ridges from the irregularities in the tape on the spool

Still gotta put the tape or the mono as a backer. I use electric tape, but I like Reel Cowboy's suggestion of teflon tape--it's even thinner. I you don't use the backer, the braided line will slip on the spool eventually. I have all my reels spooled at Kevin's and made the mistake last time of not putting the tape on. I was told the grooves in the spool would prevent the line from slipping, but it doesn't. All 3 of the spools on my Stradics without the tape started slipping within a few fishing trips. Kinda hard for the drag to work when that happens
