Do you guys really get spooled? Seriously, I have only seen somebody get spooled once and it was a young lady who tried to tighten up on a large shark, and she twisted the drag the wrong way. Her Stradic was spooled in no time. There have been times when I thought I was going to get spooled (tarpoon, bull reds, large sharks and rays), but I have always been able to either give chase, tighten drag or palm a spool. The last is not preferred, but I would rather loose a fish than have it get away with a couple hundred yards of $25 a spool PowerPro trailing it.

How about it JT? Did you really get spooled? In a creek? did you lock down it?

JT gets spooled, fooled and bambozzled all the time.

It was not me. It was my brother. And,yes it happened twice. No the drag was normal for most flats fish. These were extra large reds. Of course he is a EXTRA LARGE fellow.
Rule #1. Adjust your drag before you cast.
Rule #2. Don't adjust your drag with a fish on.

No, they just hold on to fish better so you don't get spooled.

Rule number 1 is correct.

All due respect, but I totally disagree with rule #2.
With harding running fish my drag is almost always adjusted during the first run and when the fish is boatside and ready to be lipped/netted.

You have been lucky. Line should be set to 1/3 the pound strength of the line eg: 12# line 4# drag set with a spring scale. This compensates for the amount of line on the spool after your cast and a fish taking line. It however does not compensate for a really large fish on light line on the flats. Your breaking strength will vary with more or less line on the spool. If a fish makes a run and you tighten the drag and gain line,the odds are on the next run it will break your line.
