Stretch 30

I â€˜m new at this off shore thing and want to troll while going out to my favorite pinkmouth hole Iâ€™ve found. Some of my friends told me to get some Stretch 30â€™s and I possibly will pick up a grouper. I looked at some in the store and there is an assortment of colors. Which colors work best for this time of year in say 35 to 40 foot of water?
I usually put in at Keaton Bch.
Also what type rod and reel should I use while trolling for Grouper? Should I use a steel leader, Heavy mono, or fluorocarbon?

I like bright colors. My number one S30 is all chartruese. I would choose the S30 Loud in Chart/Orange as second. Also firetiger and any of the chrome/blue/black. If the water is murkey, a dark brown or purple will usually work better.

The key is pulling them in a good loacation. Over live bottom works, but I have found that isolated rocks usually hold bigger more aggressive fish.

I like mono leaders. Usually I use 80 lb tied line to line with a no-name knot. Then to a snap swivel to make changing baits easier.

You can definitely go lighter with tackle and main line. I use 25 pound Trilene Big Game in flouro green. Penn 320 GTI's or Senator 3/0's with 6 1/2 to 7 foot rods in a medium/heavy action are best. The lighter action acts as a shock absorber. The fish that we caught today were caught using the same setups except I used my Penn 6500 Spinner and 6'6" Medium Rod.

Thanks Tom : I'd like a to catch one of those 31" bad boys like you did today, But just getting started I'll be happy catching shorts. The Pinkmouth thing get old after 100 or so but my son loves it.

I believe the S-30 Loud outfishes the others. Also, the loud only comes in one color. The Chart/Orange. I have found a way to modify them though. Go to the store where they sell them. Find a clear one and look at the rattle chamber. Memorize it. Go home and drill a small holle in the front just big enough to fit #6 shot into it. Put in 5-6 of them. Leave the last one in the hole to help seal it. Fill it in with a drop of 2 part epoxy.I use 80# Power Pro with a 5' 80# mono leader. For abrasion purposes. You can achieve greater depths with Power Pro. I have hung up in 50' of water. Good luck with the Grouper!

Didn't make it out this past weekend but hope to go over Thanksgiving weekend. Ill try your tip.
I've never caught a grouper so this ought to be fun.
