Took the family for another stab at scalloping, since we found none two weeks prior. NOAA said 1' in the morning and 2-3' in the afternoon. Got out the channel and it was pretty choppy and cloudy. We tried to go to doghead but we were getting wet so we stopped to fish closer in. The boat was pitching but my family were troopers even though the fish weren't cooperating. My beautiful wife did get a nice keeper and my boy enjoyed catching pinfish. At 11:30 the water had laid down, I asked if they wanted to go at least look for scallops, and they said yes. We ran to piney point, the sun came out, they got in the water and had a good time. My wife picked up about a gallon, enough for a mess. We all had a good time and headed in about 4:00. Fun with family is what it's all about.
Went to Steinhatchee on Aug 2-3 and went to 9 mile bar and piney point and areas in between on day one. Not many scallops. Day two went south near pepperfish and picked up about 100. Not the 1000's that my girls are used to. The upside was the fishing early each morning on the high tide. I was not expecting much, but we caught enough fish in two mornings to feed 15 folks one night. Included in the two day catch were a few flounder, spanish, and trout that included a 24" and several others 19-21.
Had my nephew from Michigan with me both days. His eyes were as wide as saucers with his first keeper speck. They were even wider when a small shark ate his second keeper at the boat and left him with half a fish. He was a bit reluctant to get in the water to look for scallops after that. He got over it when I pushed him in. Needless to say, I have another fishing buddy for life.
